E-W Truck & Equipment Co., Inc. Our History

In 1954, Earl and Ruby Winters and their children, Stuart, Phil and Karen, came to San Diego, CA and purchased the only Authorized Cummins Engine Company, sales and service facility in San Diego. It was located on Main Street and Market, downtown San Diego and was named EW Equipment Co. Earl Winters was known as "EW" in the industry for many years, hence the name. Three years later, in 1958 the business moved to the corner of National and Sampson in San Diego, and remained there until the owner sold the property. Property was developed at 7620 Broadway in Lemon Grove, and a building erected especially for EW Equipment Company. This however, was not to be the final location. On July 29, 1965, E-W Equipment Co, Incorporated was established. Bigger and better things were on the horizon for the company. In 1968, E-W Equipment Co. Inc. moved into the current location at 6336 Federal Blvd.

Earl and Ruby's son, Stuart, became the company's first truck salesman, and a new era for E-W Equipment Co. was born. Stuart was very successful, and truck sales soared. Business was doing very well not only in truck sales, but in the parts and service departments too. The company had built a good reputation from Riverside County to Yuma, and although unable to sell trucks in Mexico, enjoyed a most successful parts sales relationship. Additional service bays were built, and the parts department was expanded, as business grew and new lines were taken on.

In December, 1974, Earl suffered a massive heart attack, and passed away. Ruby and Stuart agreed that it would be the logical chain of command that Stuart would succeed his father as President. Stuart had a great deal of knowledge and background, having grown up working in the business. Through hard work and diligence, he learned management, and with good organizational skills, continued to build E-W Equipment Co. into the E-W Truck & Equipment Co., Inc. that it is known as today. Stuart added the word "Truck" to the company name to identify the type of equipment that was sold and serviced. Stuart had expanded the truck lines over the years, to include at various times, Western Star Trucks, Cherokee Trailers, Aztec Trailers, White Trucks, which became White GMC, Volvo Trucks North America, and GMC Medium Duty Trucks.

In September, 2001, Stuart passed away after a 5-month battle with cancer. With Ruby's approval, Linda, Stuart's wife of 33 years, stepped in as the President of E-W Truck & Equipment Co., Inc. She has experience in accounting, and has worked in the background of the company for many years. Linda has replaced the bookkeeper and other office personnel during vacations, and illness, is self-taught in the service department as warranty administrator, and like Ruby, did various duties that were needed, when needed.

Linda has added the Autocar franchise to the list of E-W Truck suppliers. In March of 2003, looking to expand the truck sales department, Jeff Winters, Stuart and Linda's son, has joined the company again. Jeff grew up active in the E-W Truck family, working in various capacities. In 2020, E-W Truck & Equipment Co, Inc. celebrated 66 years of doing business in San Diego. It can boast of three generations of the Winters family serving the trucking community with pride, and looks forward to a bright and successful future.
